Giant Sitka Spruce Estimated to be more than 500 years old, the Giant Sitka was named British Columbia's largest living spruce in 1983 and is fiercely protected by law. It reaches 95 m (312 ft) tall, and is surrounded by several more examples of notable size as well. The wealth of BC's northern climes were what first attracted industry such as logging to the area, a practice that is now highly regulated to protect the province's old-growth forest.
